Year after year Cypress Lake students look forward to an extremely meaningful event: The Special Olympics. Since 2005, Cypress Lake High School has hosted the Lee County Special Olympics each year. During the event ESE students (Athletes) are paired with regular-education students (Buddies). The students spend the day together playing games, walking, talking, eating, and breaking down the barriers between ESE and regular-education students.
Not only does getting involved with the Be a Buddy program provide long-lasting memories, lessons, and connections, but it is an excellent way to get volunteer hours. Be a Buddy Sponsor Mr. Dusenberry describes The Special Olympics as “…one of the most unforgettable learning experiences in [most students] young lives.” He refers to this event as ESE students’ prom, state championship, and homecoming. This is a day that ESE students can call their own, and he hopes that you will help them achieve that. The Be a Buddy program makes a true difference and serves a purpose much larger than any one person. The impact this event has on Athletes and Buddies alike is lifelong and undeniable.
With roughly 500 Athletes, Cypress Lake hosts upwards of 2,000 students and adults for this event. This year Mr. Dusenberry is looking for 500 students to be Buddies during the Special Olympics Dec. 13. Paperwork to sign up can be found in room W165, and is due Oct. 31, but your involvement doesn’t have to stop there. Be a Buddy does much more than just the Special Olympics, there is currently a Halloween candy drive for the West Wing, and all donations are due Oct. 28. Beyond candy and donation drives, Be a Buddy supports and funds many other events including Unified Sports. Current seniors are urged to get involved with the Be a Buddy program and learn more about Cypress Lake’s Ms. Cathy Scholarship. For more information on how to get involved or get volunteer hours contact Mr. Dusenberry in room W165.
