The long awaited deluxe version of Sza’s album SOS came out on Dec. 20 and it was the perfect touch to an already incredible album. Lana consists of 12 different tracks that carry a more subtle vibe than the primary tracks on SOS but still fit perfectly with the original album. Although I thoroughly enjoyed every song on the deluxe version, some stood out to me more than others.
“What Do I Do”
In “What Do I Do,” SZA explores the uncertainty of romantic decisions, blending soulful melodies with contemplative lyrics. The track’s minimalist production highlights her strong vocal abilities, effectively conveying the song’s emotional weight. This one was an immediate favorite of mine once I first listened primarily due to it’s lyrical flow.
“30 for 30”
“30 for 30”, Featuring Kendrick Lamar, stands out with its dynamic production between the artists. Every previous collaboration between Kendrick and SZA has been absolutely gorgeous and in my opinion, they’ve never made a skippable song. A month before Lana, Kendrick released his new album, DNX, and I adored “Luther”, which featured SZA. I was very excited to see that they were collaborating again on Lana and “30 for 30” did not disappoint.
“BMF”
“BMF” showcases SZA’s versatility as she sampled “The Girl from Ipanema” which infused a classic bossa nova vibe into the track. Her airy vocals complement the laid-back instrumentals, creating a great listening experience. This track immediately took me into the summertime, and I have been playing “BMF” in the car non-stop. There is no surprise that this song has become so popular following its release.
“Crybaby”
“Crybaby” dives into SZA’s vulnerabilities. The song addressed themes of emotional sensitivity and self-acceptance. The song includes a groovy bassline, creating a sound that complements its lyrics. Many have praised “Crybaby” as an album highlight and I completely agree. SZA’s beautiful song writing abilities are well displayed in this song and if you haven’t listened yet, I highly recommend you do so!
“Drive”
“Drive” reflects on the theme of driving as a means of mental escape. The track’s smooth production and SZA’s emotional delivery can resonate with listeners seeking comfort in movement. The music video, featuring Ben Stiller passionately lip-syncing during a nocturnal car ride, was such a good idea on SZA’s part and it added an interesting visual layer to the song’s narrative.
