The Cypress Lake Lady Panthers have, after many long fought games, put their first win on the board for this season. Jan. 14 the Panthers faced the Riverdale Raiders in the 14th game of their season. The very young team led by Coach Weldon has yet been able to find themselves victorious up until their 42-27 win against Riverdale.
Freshman Victoria Silva-Asujae led the team in points scored putting an impressive 21 on the Raiders defense. Senior Naomi Watkins was right by her side leading the game in assists. When it came to holding Riverdale to only 27 points the efforts came from Jenna Cook, Gaby Alarcon-Geng and Kailyn Gilligan.
Coach Weldon commented on her team’s performance saying, “I am so proud of the girls for the constant effort they have been putting in all season. We are a young team that is rebuilding from last year and they have come such a long way in regards to their skills, game-play, and court IQ. I believe that they will continuously improve from game to game for the rest of the season and I am very fortunate to have this opportunity to coach them and be able to watch them grow as players and as people.”
Senior Jenna Cook said of the win, “After a tough start to the season, the team focused on executing our game plan of putting pressure and playing with intensity. Each and every player stepped up on both ends of the court. The team’s resilience and determination helped us grab our first win of the season. We played as a team and won as a team.”
Come out to the next game the girls play against Ida Baker on Jan. 21 to see if they can keep the ball rolling and begin a new era of Panthers basketball.
