With a total of three Tony awards, seven Drama Desk awards, and a Grammy, Wicked is not new to the public. The show is said to be a prequel to the infamous Wizard of Oz. It follows the Wicked Witch of the West and Galinda the Good Witch in college and tells the story of how we came to know both witches. Wicked has broken box-office records around the world, holding gross-takings records in Los Angeles, Chicago, St. Louis, and London. The London, Broadway, and both North American touring productions simultaneously broke their respective records for the highest weekly gross, then later broke it again. In 2016, Wicked surpassed $1 billion in total Broadway revenue, joining The Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King as the only Broadway shows to do so. Not to mention, it’s the fourth longest running broadway show of all time. But even after all that, we can expect more from Wicked. The movie adaptation was recently released, and it took the public by storm. The talented Cynthia Erivo takes on the role from Indina Menzel as Elphaba. Erivo Recently starred in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple so many were thrilled to see her on the screen. Alongside her, Ariana Grande portrays Galinda the Good. When the casting choice was first announced many were skeptical about the choice to have a popstar playing such an iconic role. What they didn’t know was that Grande has a big background in broadway. At just thirteen years old, Grande played Charlotte in 13 the Musical. Either way. She plays Galinda gorgeously, with hilarious character choices. Other cast members include Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Slater, Michelle Yeoh, and so much more. Without giving too much away, the movie sprinkles in many easter eggs making it heartwarming for an average viewer, but also a viewer who might be a fan of the musical as well. The film however, does not feature the full story. It cuts off after the iconic Defying Gravity. The only complaint as far as I can see is the fact that we have to wait another year for part two. But don’t worry, A sing-a-long version is said to be coming to theatre’s December 25th.
