Cypress Lake is very proud to report senior Zachary Payne’s Navy ROTC scholarship win, amounting to $180,000!
The Navy ROTC Scholarship provides a specialized opportunity for students in Reserve Officer Training Corps programs who are interested in pursuing a future in the field. Candidates must go through a multi-step process in order to demonstrate their versatile qualifications. The application requires scoring over a 75/99 on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test, exemplary SAT/ACT scores and transcript statistics, and an exceptional performance on physical tests. Payne successfully fulfilled all of these requisites, and through his great achievements in all areas, was chosen to get the $180,000 award. He will maintain good grades, stay in a school-sponsored Navy ROTC program throughout college, and attend Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes during the summer to collect his earnings over his time in education.
Payne is excited to have been selected as one of only ten recipients out of thousands of applicants in the area, and is already planning to accomplish substantial goals with the winning prize. “I am going to be using it to attend the University of Florida, and after graduating I am going to commission in the US Marine Corps… I intend to either be an aviator or a combat engineer officer,” Payne says.
Scholarships are very beneficial in recognizing outstanding efforts and funding the ambitions of students. Payne encourages prospective contenders to apply. “Start improving on your grades, testing scores, and physical fitness, as what they look for is a candidate who is very well-rounded in those areas,” he recommends.
CLHS has also had many other students win different local and national scholarships this year. Another noteworthy student is Danielle Barsheshet, who was recently picked to receive the Tommy Jardas Scholarship for $2,000, as well as the Red Sox Scholarship for $5,000.
