After the highly anticipated release of Sabrina Carpenter’s new album, students at Cypress have had very mixed reviews. On Aug 29, Sabrina Carpenter released her 7th studio album A Man’s Best Friend, which sparked much controversy around pop culture and Sabrina’s fan base while also creating new fans. Sabrina Carpenter has become famous for her scandalous self marketing and music, so it shouldn’t have come as a surprise to pop culture when she continued the trend with her latest release.
A small number of the students surveyed at Cypress (21%) stayed up until midnight on Aug 28 just to listen to the new album. By morning, there were many opposing views on the soundtrack roaming around the internet. But as time went on, people’s views changed the more they listened to it. “The more I listened to the album, the more I noticed the differences and the individual sound and tone of each song,” said Junior Michael Gurevich.
Sabrina Carpenter’s previous album Short N’ Sweet was a hit across the globe. Some fans found themselves disappointed with her new album and didn’t think Man’s Best Friend lived up to Short N’ Sweet. Some students argued Short N’ Sweet had deeper songs and were written with more intention, while others believed the same about Man’s Best Friend.
“One standout element I enjoyed more in A Man’s Best Friend was its sharper satirical edge. While Short N’ Sweet leaned into playful romanticism and witty charm, A Man’s Best Friend took that same voice and dialed up the irony, especially in tracks like “Manchild” and “Tears,” states Sophomore Monika Silver. These songs don’t just poke fun at modern dating—they dissect it with biting humor and self-awareness. This could be a common theme for people around Cypress Lake Highschool as 61% of students have opinions similar to this.
While there were many positive reviews, 39% of students opposed this by saying they like Short N’ Sweet more. Sophomore Claire Lain enjoyed Short N’ Sweet and thought that the “writing and innuendos were more subtle, and it felt more well written and developed.” While there have been many different viewpoints surrounding this new album, many fans are excited regardless of dissenting opinions.
