Audrey Hobert has taken the internet by storm with her two new hit singles, “Sue Me” and “Bowling Alley.” Fans on the internet are buzzing about the rise of a new popstar and the sound she brings to the music industry. Hobert is no newbie to the music scene though: Her father is Bill Hobert, a writer and producer known for his work on Scrubs, The Middle, and The Really Loud House; her brother is Malcom Todd, a musical artist gaining much popularity in the alternative genre. Hobert herself is a co-writer for her long term friend of many years Gracie Abrams.
On August 15, Hobart released her debut album Who’s The Clown featuring both singles and so much more. Who’s the Clown in its entirety feels like reading a diary of any teenage girl transitioning to adulthood. It brings a sort of weirdness and individuality (the kind that makes you want to jump up and dance awfully with your friends) that many artists are lacking. The album embraces her comedy as a coping mechanism for emotional desperation and desire, not only for connection, but her desire to make it in the industry, or to better her appearance. This is evident in songs like “Shooting Star” and “Sue me,” and references her album title, presenting her deepest insecurities as a joke, and allowing herself to fall so that the listener can rise.
The album, with its 2000s vibe, is girly and goofy with every song feeling like a confessional. It feels like a sleepover with best friends, telling stories about everything that’s going on in their lives. The album ends with “Silver Jubilee,” a party anthem celebrating life, the moment, and the people around you. She sings “I’m-a put my drink up/’m-a tell my sister she’s perfect/Yeah I’m-a live it up like my life starts now/Blink and you could miss it, it’s over.” She doesn’t take herself too seriously which is why the album is so fun to listen to. Stream Who’s The Clown on any streaming platform.
