STEM@Work is a career based exploration initiative that allows students to learn about potential job opportunities in Lee County, specifically in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields.
Last week, Sept. 18, 28 students from Cypress Lake High School attended their first field trip to the LeeHealth Healthy Life Center along with eight other schools, including Estero High School, Riverdale High School, and Dunbar High School. Lee Health set up the trip, providing students with a multitude of interesting opportunities, such as how to become a dietician or get into hospital maintenance. The goal of the program is to help students interested in the health field to see the wide variety of opportunities.
Students performed CPR on dummies at the Estero Fire Department station and some students even got to use a surgical robot to play the game Operation. One of those students, junior Stella Busby, said, “It was a great educational experience. I learned a bit about how surgeries are performed by seeing the robot work first hand.”
Another Cypress student, senior Chino Cabaero, added, “The robot was very cool, and also being able to see all of the available health care careers related to STEM.”
The trip was organized and chaperoned by Ranae Atkinson, Cypress’s College and Career Specialist. She recommends anyone interested in STEM apply for the STEM@Work program at the beginning of next year as the deadline for this year has already passed.
STEM@Work students will be attending a second field trip on Nov. 13 to B&I Contractors.
