In the past and currently, the Cypress Lake High School’s Unified Bowling team comes together to celebrate the spirit of inclusion and sportsmanship at the Unified Special Olympics. They are first held at Districts, then Regionals, next is States, and finally Nationals. The event which features, 6 of our own Panther athletes, is a heartwarming display of talent, determination, and unity among individuals with and without intellectual disabilities.
The Unified Special Olympics aims to promote social inclusion through shared sports training and competition. Athletes participate in weekly training at the bowling arena “Lightning Strikes Bowl.” The high lights of these training sessions are the friendship’s we make along the way. The trainings are held from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. Last year our bowlers, almost made their way to nationals but were unable due to coming into 4th place.
Local schools play a crucial role in the event, with students volunteering as coaches and buddies. It truly is incredible to see how our athletes inspire one another. Our team is not just competing; we are forming friendships and breaking down barriers. With schools being so important in attendance the atmosphere is electric, filled with laughter cheers, and the sound of bowling shoes pounding the hardwood floors. Families and friends gather to support the buddies and the athletes. This creates a sense of support from loved ones and makes a vibrant sense of community. The Special Olympics shows it is more than just sports; it’s about showing that everyone belongs.
Our upcoming Special Olympic team will be heading to states during the Month of October 2024. As the day comes close, the athletes and buddies are prepared for anything and never lose their sense of familiarity and personal ever-lasting friendships.
