Recently, Cypress Lake High and other schools had the opportunity to submit art pieces to Sydney and Berne Davis Art Center for this year’s Wicked Walk. Mrs Bonwell had her freshman ceramics class make a large series of humorous sculptures depicting goblins of various shapes and sizes interacting with a multitude of baking supplies. These goblins are posed making large messes, swimming in cake batter, cracking eggs, drinking oil, and more.
The impressive texture of these goblins show the amazing capabilities of the new freshmen in their technical skill and inventiveness. Mrs. Bonwell has said before that it was the ingenuity of a prior student that allowed the new technique to be used for years after being honed – using thin bits of strong wire within the clay limbs to stretch the abilities of the clay normally to make dramatic, thin, and impossible looking proportions. This wire was used throughout the entire class, making each of the goblins look strange and different, even compared to one another.
The goblins were showcased at the event with their trays and messes, from the beginning of the baking process to the end, showing how they destroy the product every step of the way. They represent a perfect expression of Mayhem and Madness, this year’s theme provided by Sydney and Berne. The gallery was open on the 24th and 25th, with an open gallery that Friday, and tours both days. Visitors saw the work of various schools, with Cypress standing out for the quality and quantity of our pieces. Those who missed the even downtown may be able to catch a glimpse at these creatures at the Center’s first Gallery Opening, coming up soon.
