For the first time in Lee County history, a Cypress Lake High student has earned a spot in the Florida All-State Guitar Ensemble — and that student is Madelyn Martinez, a dedicated musician and guitar major who has been part of Cypress’s music program for three years.
The All-State Guitar Ensemble is a highly competitive, statewide event where musicians audition for the chance to perform at the Florida Music Education Association (FMEA) conference.
The audition process was both challenging and rewarding. “I got my music months before the audition,” said Martinez. “I was very nervous about deciding to audition, but I still tried anyway. I was given two songs and an excerpt from another piece to perform in front of a judge. Even though it took months to prepare for, I enjoyed every second of it.”
For Martinez, being selected means much more than just performing. “Being accepted to the All-State Guitar Ensemble gives me the opportunity to connect with other musicians and members of the Florida Music Education Association,” she said. “It also helps me move forward with my path of becoming a musician.”
Now, as part of the All-State Guitar Ensemble, Martinez will have the chance to perform alongside talented musicians from across Florida. “Being in the ensemble means I can learn and play with other talented musicians,” she said. “I’m always excited to work on new projects and perform with others.”
Martinez’’s love for music started early. “I first became passionate about music when I played piano at seven,” she said. “Since then, I’ve played a variety of instruments, but guitar is the one I connect with most. I see music not just as entertainment, but as a form of art that can be shared and loved by others.”
Her dedication and passion have not only earned her a place in a prestigious state ensemble but also made history for Lee County.
