Winter sports have begun at CLHS, and the girls’ soccer team is definitely a group to keep your eye on. More girls tried out this season, causing for a bigger team filled with increased talent and dedication to the sport. Despite there being changes from last season to this season, the band of athletes are heading in a great direction.
During their preseason matches, they went up against Fort Myers (0-3 L), Ida Baker (0-0 T), Bonita (1-0 W), and Riverdale (1-0 W). The Riverdale match particularly stood out, as last season, the team experienced a tough loss against them, causing there to be some nerves surrounding the match. Kenzie Canney, the team’s new forward, scored a freekick, winning the game for the team. “I was fouled outside of the box. I decided to take a shot after some contemplating and luckily the ball went in and I scored a goal for my team,” Canney said.
As of Nov. 7, the team has played two regular season games against East Lee and Fort Myers. The win against East Lee was big, concluding with a score of 6-1. They lost to Fort Myers with a score of 0-2. The opposing team scored twice in the first five minutes, but after that, our team held them and made sure to not let anything else slide.
Neeve Farrell, a second year varsity player on the team, feels optimistic about the games the team has played together and for what the upcoming season holds. “It’s a new team so it took us a second to work together, but we have a lot of talent and potential, probably even enough to be a top team.”
